Exosect Wins At The SOFHT Annual Awards

Exosect is proud to announce that its Exosex SPTab solution, was awarded the title of ‘Best New Product’ at The Society of Food Hygiene and Technology Awards.

The Annual Lecture and awards ceremony, held at the Millennium Mayfair Hotel on Thursday November 20th, brings together all those who work in the food sector. The SOFHT Awards recognises and celebrates the excellence within the food industry and its associated industries.

“Exosex SPTab is the most innovative product to come on the market for moth control in the last ten years” comments Dave Maxwell of Hygiene Group, “and it thoroughly deserves this recognition. For a considerable time this area of pest control has had a limited number of methods so we are even more delighted that this new product is a green one, as it helps our clients to fulfil their environmental policies”.

Exosex SPTab is a small tablet consisting of Exosect’s Entostat™ powder formulated with minute quantities of the female sex pheromone common to five of the major moth pests of food processing and storage; Plodia interpunctella, Ephestia elutella, Ephestia kuehniella, Ephestia figulilella, Cadra cautella.

Launched in the UK earlier this year, the Exosex SPTab tablet works by attracting male moths to the Entostat™ powder and female pheromone. As the male moths pick up Entostat powder, their pheromone receptors become overloaded with pheromone and they are unable to locate females. A male carrying Entostat™ powder will form a mobile pheromone dispenser, producing “false” pheromone trails, which attract additional males.

Contact between the males ensures that the Entostat™ powder and the confusion effect is automatically passed on, this process is called Auto-Confusion™. The result is a state of sexual confusion amongst the male moth population leading to effective mating disruption.

“We are so pleased to have won this award after years of hard work,” says Exosect’s Professional Products Manager, Georgina Donovan. “The use of pheromone technology as a control is very innovative within this sector. Exosex SPTab works with current pheromone monitoring traps so as well as reducing the moth infestation; it also enables Pest Controllers to continue to record data and specifically pinpoint sources of infestation.

We would like to pay particular thanks to Dave Maxwell of Hygiene Group for his enthusiasm, support and dedication in helping us to fully demonstrate this technology.”

Exosect SPTab is certified for organic use by Organic Farmers & Growers Ltd. To date, Exosect’s pest management solutions have been registered and launched in a number of international territories including the UK, US, South Africa, New Zealand, and Belgium, with further EU approvals expected in the near future.
